Bye-Bye Dodgers
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have advanced to their first World Series in 44 years (1982), and they did so in historic fashion. The City of Milwaukee is riding high now after the Brewers managed to sweep the highest-paid team in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Starting the series in Milwaukee, the Brewers jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the series, taking the first two games at home. The series then moved to Los Angeles, where the Brewers took game 3, 6-2. The Dodgers started hot in game 4, scoring 4 runs in just the 2nd inning, 3 of which came off the bat of Shohei Ohtani’s 428-foot home run. They were held scoreless the rest of the game, while Milwaukee piled up 6 runs, completing the comeback and the sweep of the series, sending them to the World Series. Although the Brewers were underdogs heading into their series against the back-to-back-champion Los Angeles Dodgers, they managed to become the first team to ever sweep the Dodgers in the NLCS. Milwaukee ran through the heavily favoured World Series winners and now awaits the winner of the Tampa Bay Rays vs. the Cleveland Guardians ALCS series, which the Rays currently lead, 3 games to 2. The Rays will look to close the series out at home tomorrow night, Monday, October 19th. First pitch is at 5:08 PM PST. Neither starting pitcher has been announced yet.
NFL
The last MNF was a back-and-forth overtime thriller between the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams. The Bills came out on top 37-34 after getting a second life in overtime when Rams kicker Harrison Mevis had the game-winning field goal blocked by Bills DE Greg Rousseau. The Bills got the ball back, marched down the field, and Tyler Bass kicked the 45-yard game-winning field goal. That was Mevis’s 2nd missed field goal of the game and his 4th of the year, which led to the Rams releasing him Tuesday morning. He has not been picked up by a new team yet. The Philadelphia Eagles have stated that starting QB Jalen Hurts is going to be sidelined for the foreseeable future. Hurts has been ruled out for an indefinite amount of time after the Eagles' medical staff discovered a superficial blood clot in his leg. Hurts was cleated during the Eagles' practice, which is believed to be the cause of the clot. From here, the story is a little cloudy, but it seems that Hurts flew to London to play in week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, received an ultrasound after the flight landed for the calf injury, which then revealed the blood clot. He was then somehow, someway, cleared to play the game in London and cleared to fly home. It is general knowledge that you should not fly with a blood clot due to the dangers of it moving or growing. When they landed, further scans revealed that the clot has, in fact, now moved. Immediately after, the Eagles shut Hurts down for the foreseeable future. It’s terrible to see how this entire situation has been handled by the Eagles medical staff. At a professional level, this should have been handled in a much smarter manner. 2 things are for certain: Hurts never should have flown to London, and he never, ever should have played in that game. We are now awaiting further information on the situation. In other news, Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams has made his return after being out with a hamstring injury. Williams missed 3 weeks and returned in week 6, leading the Bears to a win against the Atlanta Falcons. Williams threw 30-of-36 for 305 YDS and 1 TD in his return. The Los Angeles Chargers still remain winless after a loss against the Kansas City Chiefs this week. This is the worst start in Chargers history since 2000, when the team lost the first 11 games and finished with a record of 1-15. The Chargers head into bye week now and will return to play their fellow Los Angeles team, the Los Angeles Rams, on Sunday, November 2nd.
NHL
The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Buffalo Sabres in overtime last night. The matchup was 3-3 heading into overtime, when Cole Caufield recorded his 2nd goal of the night, giving the Canadiens the 4-3 OT win. Caufield, Texier, and Bolduc were goal scorers for the Canadiens, while Thompson, Quinn, and Norris recorded the Sabres' 3 goals. After a 3-on-1 chance for Buffalo, the shot went wide, ringing around the boards where Cole Caufield picked it up and sniped one top-left corner on a breakaway for the Canadiens' win. Jacob Fowler recorded himself another win and stopped 23/26, with many believing he is now the Canadiens #1 goalie. Caufield's 2-goal Saturday night puts him up to 5 goals on the season and keeps him living up to his nickname “Mr. Saturday Night”, due to his high scoring on Saturday nights. Nick Suzuki recorded his team-leading 10th point of the season after an assist on Zachary Bolduc’s goal. The Canadiens host Macklin Celebrini and the San Jose Sharks in their next game on Tuesday, October 20th, while the Sabres head home to host the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, October 21st.
The NHL held the Frozen Frenzy on Tuesday, October 13th, with all 32 teams playing in one night, and games beginning in 15-minute staggered times. The night featured some great matchups, including 3 games needing OT or a shootout. Brady Tkachuk, a recent pickup by the Florida Panthers, also recorded his first goal as a Panther, followed by 2 more to give himself the natural hat trick (the 3 goals from the hat trick come in a row, with no one scoring in between). All 3 goals were assisted by his brother, Matthew Tkachuk. In the Panthers' next game, they faced the Vancouver Canucks, where Brady Tkachuk recorded another natural hat trick. Then, in the next Panthers' game, Carter Verhaeghe recorded a natural hat trick! Sam Bennett also recorded a hat trick in that game, although it wasn’t a natural one. History was made after Verhaeghe recorded that natural hat trick, as the Panthers became the first team in the history of the NHL to record 3 natural hat tricks in 3 consecutive games. 4 hat tricks in 3 games for the Florida Panthers. The Panthers and Brady Tkachuk return to face his former team, the Ottawa Senators, in their next match on Wednesday.
UFC
The UFC returned to Canada last night for UFC Fight Night in Edmonton, Alberta. The card featured 12 Canadian fighters, from the prelims to the Main Event. 7 Canadians lost their bouts while 5 were victorious. The biggest story of the night was Mike Malott’s legendary finish against Joaquin Buckley. The vicious knee KO came in round 2 of the main event and slept Buckley immediately. Mike Malott, who was ranked #11 in the Welterweight division, will surely be moving up the rankings after this performance against #8-ranked Joaquin Buckley. It’s unclear who Malott will be facing next, but it will likely be a higher-ranked opponent after that performance.
