The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series Champions
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have won their first World Series in franchise history. After 58 seasons, the Brewers are taking the Commissioner's Trophy back to Wisconsin for the very first time. The Brewers closed out the series 4 games to 1 against the Tampa Bay Rays after their 4-1 win on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field in Tampa. Jacob Misiorowski took the mound again in game 5, going 5.2 innings and only allowing 2 hits. JoJo Romero and Abner Uribe held things down until Trevor Megill came in and closed out the last 2 innings. The Rays managed to get 1 back in the bottom of the 9th, but it wasn’t enough as a ground ball to 2nd ended the Rays' season and brought the Brewers their first-ever World Series. William Contreras was awarded the MVP trophy after putting together an impressive performance of phenomenal hitting, excellent defensive play, and a high success rate of the ABS challenge system. Aaron Ashby, the Brewers’ relief pitcher, went a total of 18 innings throughout the postseason without allowing a single run. Ashby allowed only 5 hits and 3 walks, with 20 strikeouts through this postseason, an incredible stat line for the 28-year-old. Overall, the Brewers went 11-2 throughout the postseason, showing complete dominance through each series. An incredible accomplishment for the franchise and the city of Milwaukee. The Brewers held their Championship parade through the streets of Milwaukee on Friday, October 30th. The first of many celebrations the city will have this offseason.
NHL
Dylan Larkin, former Captain of the Detroit Red Wings, has recently informed the team he will no longer be playing for them. After the whirlwind of an offseason he created for himself and the team, he did suit up for a total of 10 games on the season before backing out of his commitments to the team. The Red Wings have now suspended Larkin, without pay, for an indefinite amount of time while they work to resolve a trade. Larkin has an NTC (no-trade clause) and has only given a list of 10 teams he’s willing to go to. Shawn Horcoff, the Red Wings interim GM, stated this during a press conference after the news broke, “I’m prepared to wait as long as necessary to make sure that the return that we get is something that is good for the Red Wings overall.” When a list of only 10 teams, all dealing with cap space issues is given, it doesn’t make it easy to trade for a 30 year old 2nd line center, nearing the end of his prime. It will be interesting to see what unfolds in the following weeks revolving around this issue, but as for the Red Wings they seem to be moving forward happily without Dylan Larkin in the locker room. Alex DeBrincat, who is one of the top candidates to be the franchises next captain stated this about the situation, “We’ve come together as a group and decided we’re going to stick up for each other, play for each other every day, come to the rink and work hard. That’s the culture we’re setting here. We’re going to move forward and we’re going to be fine.”
In a shocking update, it has just been announced that Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov has said he has no intention of re-signing in Tampa and has officially requested a trade. Kucherov is the reigning Hart Memorial Trophy winner (League MVP), and recently became the Tampa Bay Lightning’s all time point leader with 1,138 after passing Steven Stamkos. Kucherov’s contract expires at the end of this season, where he will become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign wherever he receives an offer from. If the Lightning were to trade him prior to this, they would be able to get some assets in return, but letting the contract expire leaves them with nothing. Lightning GM Julien BriseBois was quick to put out a statement after the news broke on social media, stating “ We are aware of the media reports regarding the future of Nikita Kucherov with the Lightning. We unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita.” An interesting response to the situation from the Lightning GM, considering they will receive nothing in return come the end of the season. Assuming the Lightning will try to convince Kucherov to sign an extension before that, the 33-year-old seems to have no intention of continuing his career in Tampa. Kucherov has spent his entire 13-season career with the Lightning so far. It’s all speculation as of right now, but it seems that the tension between Kucherov and the Lightning is coming from Kucherov wanting a 6 to 8 year max extension, and the Lightning offering nowhere near that. The Lightning have a history of not wanting to give their veterans big contracts, as the same situation happened with Steven Stamkos in 2024. Stamkos was 34 when his contract was up for renewal, and even after stating he had full intention and desire to re-sign and finish his career in Tampa, the Lightning were nowhere near the number Stamkos thought he deserved after 16 seasons and 2 Stanley Cups with the team. Stamkos left the team, joining the Nashville Predators on a 4-year $32 million deal, $8 million AAV. We will have to wait and see if a similar situation happens with Nikita Kucherov.
NBA
Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards will be sidelined for roughly 2 months after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The procedure was held to treat a lingering issue from the prior season. The star guard for the Timberwolves was averaging 33.3 points, 3.5 assists, 2 steals, and 4.8 rebounds per game through the first 4 games of the season.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers hosted the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football this week. The Packers held on to win by 8, 27-19, after being up 27-10, moving to 5-3 on the season. However, the issues continue for the Packers' kicker, Trey Smack, who missed another PAT (point after touchdown) last night, bringing his total missed kicks up to 8 for the season, the most in the NFL right now. Jordan Love continues to play pretty solid football, going 30/41 for 288 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT. Packers wide receiver Christian Watson did something last night that may never happen again in the NFL. After suffering a chest injury on a play early in the 2nd quarter, he left the game to be examined. Watson was taken in an ambulance to a nearby hospital for further scans after he was coughing up blood on the sideline. Well, after the scans revealed no internal bleeding, Watson returned to the field in the same ambulance and was back on the sideline late in the 3rd quarter. He went on to catch 2 more passes for 13 yards, bringing his stat line to 113 yards and 8 receptions for the night. It was a scene that seemed straight out of a movie, and I’m not sure we’ll ever see it happen again. It was later revealed that Watson suffered a cracked/broken rib, and there is no indication whether he will miss time or not. The Packers face the New England Patriots in their next matchup on Sunday, November 8th, while the Carolina Panthers head home to host the Denver Broncos.
