Messi Makes History
FIFA
Lionel Messi has broken the record for most goals scored in World Cup history. Messi has 5 goals through 2 games in this World Cup for Argentina, leading the Golden Boot race.
A hat trick in their first game gave Messi the tie for most goals in a World Cup, at 16, and then he added another 2 to his total in game two against Austria. The record-breaking 17th goal came 38 minutes into the game, and he tacked on his 18th in 90+5’. So far, Messi has scored all 5 of Argentina’s goals. Argentina plays Jordan this Saturday. June 27th, at 7:00 PM, although they have already secured their spot in the round of 32. Alongside Messi, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are among the race, tied at 4 goals each. Haaland and Norway take on Mbappe and France this Friday, June 26th, at 12:00 PM. It was only a matter of time before Cristiano Ronaldo made his presence felt at the World Cup, and he did just that during Portugal’s second game against Uzbekistan today. Tallying 7 shots on goal and 2 goals, including his first of the 2026 World Cup, led Portugal to a dominating 5-0 win. Portugal will face Colombia on Saturday, June 27th, at 4:30 PM.
NHL
The Edmonton Oilers are making headlines in the NHL right now after hiring a new head coach, Mike Babcock. Babcock, who last coached in November of 2019, is a controversial figure in the NHL, to say the least. While he does have a phenomenal resume, he has had many allegations and controversies about his coaching styles, his mental abuse, and his uncomfortable tactics used to turn players against each other. The Columbus Blue Jackets last hired Babcock in 2023, but he was forced to resign before making an appearance behind the bench. After allegations of invading players' privacy by forcing players to let him go through their personal cellphones and photos, Babcock put in his resignation before setting foot behind the bench. We will have to wait and see how things play out in Edmonton with Mike Babcock, but apparently, the leadership group in Edmonton was asked and confirmed they are okay with the decision to hire the controversial figure. The Oilers may be at risk of losing their key superstar, Conor Mcdavid, if they can’t get operations running smoothly quickly.
MLB
The Toronto Blue Jays have crawled their way back to .500. Almost at the halfway point of the season, the Jays have had a tough first half. Dealing with injuries and setbacks along the way, the team has finally reached the .500 mark at 39-39 with their win against the Houston Astros.
We will see if the team can keep the momentum going and reach a positive record in the near future.
