World Cup Controversy & NHL Moves
FIFA
The World Cup round of 16 is well underway, and unfortunately Canada’s historic run has come to an end. Entering this tournament, Canada had only scored 2 goals and never earned a point in the World Cup. They leave the 2026 World Cup with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 9 goals throughout 5 matches. Unfortunately, in the end, falling 3-0 to Morocco in the round of 16 ended their historic run. They controlled the first half of the game well, but couldn’t get much going in the second half, giving up an early goal and then 2 more towards the end as they were in full attack mode. While their time at the 2026 World Cup has ended, they should be nothing but proud of what they have accomplished and shown the country this year. With watch parties and support from coast to coast, this team has united the Country in a special way. Morocco will now take on one of the tournament favourites, France.
Norway has defeated Brazil 2-1 to advance into the quarter-finals, with Haaland adding another 2 goals, tying Mbappe and Messi as leaders for the Golden Boot. They will now take on Harry Kane and England. Facing the elevation and home crowd challenges, England defeated Mexico in a close 3-2 thriller. England’s Jarell Quansah picked up a red card around the 54th minute of the match, leaving England down to 10 players to finish the game. Harry Kane added another goal, bringing himself up to 6 in total for the 2026 World Cup, just 1 goal behind the leaders.
2 of the tournament favourites met in the round of 16, Portugal and Spain. Spending 90 minutes at 0-0, Spain opened the scoring in the first minute of stoppage time, giving Spain the 1-0 lead. This would be enough for the win as they played out the remaining 5 minutes, holding Portugal scoreless. Spain will continue their World Cup run as one of the favourites to win it all, facing the winner of USA and Belgium in the quarter-finals.
In their round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, USA’s Folarin Balogun picked up a controversial red card, which carries an automatic 1-game suspension, making him ineligible for the round-of-16 match against Belgium. This would give Belgium a key advantage, as the USA would be without one of their star strikers. But even more controversially, the ruling has been overturned by FIFA, and Balogun is now eligible to play in the next match. This has sparked widespread controversy, frustration, and debate across the football world. This is the first time since 1962 that a player has been allowed to play in a World Cup match after receiving a red card in the game prior. Many speculate that this is due to the very friendly relationship between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and United States President Donald Trump. The FIFA president has also confirmed that Trump will be with him to present the World Cup trophy on July 19th. The 2 appear to have a very good relationship, and Trump personally phoned Infantino to request a review of this red card. Following this phone call, the suspension was overturned, and Balogun is in against Belgium in one of the biggest matches of the 2026 World Cup. Trump also made a public statement thanking FIFA for overturning this suspension. The football world has been turned upside down due to this action, claiming that politics are now getting involved in the sport, corrupting it, and Infantino is abusing his power to attempt to shape the outcome of the tournament. We will have to see how this affects the outcome of the match.
NHL
The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna as the first overall pick of the 2026 NHL draft. McKenna was widely projected as the first overall pick, and his dreams came true on June 26th. The Leafs have also added veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to the roster, along with defenceman Darren Raddysh. The San Jose Sharks selected 2 of the top 10 prospects, picking Ivar Stenberg at #2, and Keaton Verhoeff at #9. The Sharks have lots of young talent to develop in the coming years to play alongside Macklin Celebrini. The Philadelphia Flyers have offer sheeted 21-year-old Leo Carlsson of the Anaheim Ducks, with an outstanding $18 million AAV, which would make him the highest-paid player in the league. The Ducks have 7 days to decide if they want to match the offer, or they will receive 4 first-round draft picks as compensation. Matching this would leave the Ducks with under $10 million in cap space.
The Ottawa Senators have traded captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers, who will now team up with his brother Matthew. The 2 brothers will now join forces down in Florida, and another American player leaves the Canadian market, a trend that his been growing strong since the Olympics. Ottawa received 3 first round picks, including the 9th and 25th overall this year, and a conditional first rounder in 2029.
MLB
The Toronto Blue Jays just completed their series in Seattle, and boy was it underwhelming. There is always a big turnout of West Coast fans down in Seattle for the Jays, but they did not give much of a performance this year. Dropping 2 of the 3 games there, losing 11-0 and 4-0, the fans that made the trip must feel a little disappointed. Although they did win one game, 2-0.
NBA
Jaylen Brown has been dealt from the Boston Celtics to a division rival, the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics traded the star player away in exchange for veteran Paul George and draft picks. A move that shocked the basketball world. Another blockbuster trade took place in Milwaukee after the Bucks traded away Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo in exchange for 4 players, including Tyler Herro, and a magnitude of draft picks. Giannis spent 13 seasons with the Bucks, winning 1 championship, the Finals MVP, and 2 NBA MVP’s.
