Knicks, Hurricanes, and Vozinha

NBA

The New York Knicks have done it. After 53 years, the NBA Championship will be returning to the hands of the New York Knicks. After another double-digit comeback victory and Jalen Brunson’s magic, the Knicks posted a gentleman’s sweep, defeating the Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to win the series 4-1. Jalen Brunson dropped 45 points, tying Michael Jordan’s record for the most points in a road game in an NBA Finals series-clinching win. The supporting cast of Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart posted 14 and 13 points. For the Spurs, Dylan Harper dropped 25 points, and Victor Wembanyama put up 19 in the face of defeat. New York City was wild Saturday night after the game was completed, filling the streets with pandemonium and recklessness. While it was supposed to be a celebration, things unfortunately quickly got out of hand, leading to injuries, stabbings, and lootings. The real fans, however, celebrated as they should, feeling the sense of relief and joy on this historic day. They patiently await the Championship parade that will take place on Thursday, June 18th, through the Financial District in NYC.

NHL

On Sunday, June 14th, Jordan Staal and the Carolina Hurricanes closed out the series in Vegas after 6 hard-fought games. Posting a 22-save, 3-0 shutout, Brandon Bussi, the backup goaltender who was acquired off waivers, stole the show. Taylor Hall and Jackson Blake put the Canes up 2-0, while Nikolaj Ehlers sealed the deal to make it 3-0. Jordan Staal became the oldest player to win the Conn Smythe trophy, at 37 years old. Staal put up 7 points in the finals, 6 goals and 1 assist, while putting up 12 points total throughout the playoffs. The Golden Knights' star players were quiet in game 6, with Marner having 3 shots on goal, Stone having 2, and Eichel 2 as well. Rod Brind’Amour became the fourth person in history to win the Stanley Cup as a player and a coach for the same franchise, cementing himself in Carolina Hurricanes and NHL history.

FIFA World Cup

Cape Verde just broke all of Spain's momentum heading into the World Cup after putting together a clean sheet, 0-0 draw with the tournament favourites. The Spanish National Team were -1200 favourites heading into the match, which gave them a 92% probability of winning. Cape Verde’s debut match in the World Cup resulted in their first-ever World Cup points. Goalkeeper Vozinha (Josimar Dias) had 7 saves against Spain in that match, making a name for himself in the sport. The 40-year-old keeper grew quickly on Instagram, from 50,000 to over 9,000,000 followers, and is still growing at the time of this post. Cape Verde looks to continue this momentum into their second match against Uruguay, while Spain looks to regain their momentum with a win against Saudi Arabia, both on Sunday, June 21st.
